What is an Employer of Record (EOR)?

An Employer of Record (EOR) is a company that legally employs a person in a country on behalf of another organization and takes care of the contract, payroll and local employment compliance. At Hires we are that legal employer, with our own entities in eight Latin American countries, while your company directs the day-to-day work.

When does an EOR make sense?

It makes sense if…

  • You want to hire in a Latin American country where your company has no legal entity.
  • Your company has a hiring freeze with an EOR you can add people without increasing your own headcount.
  • You're testing a market before deciding whether to set up your own company there.
  • You need to add people in several countries with a single point of contact and local invoicing.
  • You've already chosen the person we employ them for you, no search by us required. And if you still need to find someone, we can run the search too.

When it doesn't

  • Your company already has its own legal entity in the country. In that case you usually don't need an EOR.
  • What you need is to find candidates. That's what our RPO in Latin America or a search is for.

Frequently asked questions

What is an Employer of Record (EOR)?

It's a company that legally employs a person in a country on behalf of another organization. The EOR signs the local employment contract, runs payroll and meets employment obligations, while the client company directs the day-to-day work.

Can I hire employees in another country without a legal entity?

Yes. With an Employer of Record, the person is employed by the EOR's local entity, which takes on the employment relationship. At Hires we do this in Argentina, Mexico, Colombia, Chile, Peru, Uruguay, Panama and Brazil.

Which Latin American countries does Hires offer EOR in?

In the eight countries where we have our own legal entity: Argentina, Mexico, Colombia, Chile, Peru, Uruguay, Panama and Brazil.

Does Hires use its own entities or a third-party network?

Its own entities. We are the legal employer through our own entity in each country, where we invoice and employ locally.

Who directs the person's day-to-day work?

Your company. You set tasks, goals and ways of working; Hires is the legal employer and handles the contract, payroll and local compliance.

Can an EOR help during a hiring freeze?

Yes. With an EOR, people join your team with Hires as their legal employer, without increasing your company's own headcount.

How much does an Employer of Record cost?

It depends on the country, the salary and local employer costs. We prepare a proposal for each case.

Can I use the EOR for someone my company has already chosen?

Yes. You can use our EOR on its own to employ people your company has already chosen, with no search by Hires. If you also need to find candidates, we combine it with our RPO or a search.
